Red Devils Sink Vikings

The Treutlen Vikings took to the road for their third game in 11 days on Friday night to Hawkinsville and fell to the Red Devils 27 – 13 at Bobby Gentry Stadium.  The loss snapped a two game road win streak for the Vikings.

On the Vikings first possession, a Red Devil defender punched the ball out of the Viking quarterback’s hands, giving Hawkinsville a short field to start the game.  Hawkinsville took advantage, scoring on a Zenard Smith 4-yard run with 9:21 remaining in the first quarter.  The Mason Coley PAT was good and the Red Devils led 7 – 0.

The Vikings answered the score on a 12-yard run by quarterback Kylan Page with just 26 seconds remaining in the first quarter but the PAT sailed wide left and the Vikings trailed 7 – 6 going into the second quarter.

Hawkinsville added to their lead with 8:34 left before the half on a Martin McDonald 2-yard run.  The two-point conversion attempt was stopped by the Viking defense and Hawkinsville led 13 – 6 going into halftime.

Treutlen took the lead early when senior running back Rod Fuller ran untouched 34 yards to paydirt with 10:38 remaining in the first quarter.  A two-point conversion run by quarterback Kylan Page was successful and the Vikings led 8 – 0.

Montgomery County would not go down without a fight, scoring with 4:40 left in the game on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Harris to Joydn Patternson.  The two-point conversion run by Coglin was successful and the lead was cut to 32 – 24.

The Eagle defense held the Vikings to get the ball back one last time to try and tie the game, but the Viking defense held, sacking Eagle quarterback Jay Harris on the last play of the game to secure the victory.

The Vikings will play again this Saturday, October 19th in Vienna against the Dooly County Bobcats with kickoff set for 1:00 PM.  Catch all the action on Sweet Onion Country 101.7 FM and online at www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com with Jeff Raiford and Nathan Lamb.

The Treutlen Vikings traveled to Rochelle Friday night for their first region contest of the season and fell to the Patriots of Wilcox County 36 – 7.

The Vikings got on the scoreboard first when running back Rod Fuller broke loose for 34-yards to give the Vikings their only lead of the night with 3:03 remaining in the first quarter.  The PAT was good by Leo Brinson and Treutlen led 7 – 0.

Mistakes Cost Vikings In Wrightsville

The Treutlen Vikings traveled to Wrightsville to face the Johnson County Trojans Friday Night with mistakes proving costly on a wet night as they fell to the Trojans by a score of 21 – 6.  It was the fifth consecutive loss to Johnson County in the series.

The Trojans took their first possession and drove 55 yards to paydirt when quarterback Nathan Turberville scored on a keeper around the left side to give the Trojans the early lead with 5:14 remaining in the first quarter.  The PAT was good and the Trojans led 7 – 0.

Unable to move the ball on their first possession, the Vikings attempt to punt was thwarted when the snap flew over the head of punter Jake Brooks, giving the Trojans great field position at the Viking 12-yard line.  Trojan QB Turberville scored a few plays later on another keeper around the left side, extending the Trojan lead with 2:43 left in the quarter.  The two-point conversion run was successful, and Johnson County led 15 – 0.

The Viking defense began to stiffen, keeping the Trojans in check until a Viking turnover gave the Trojans great field position again.  The Trojans intercepted a Viking pass, returning it inside the Viking 20-yard line.  A facemask penalty on the Vikings during the tackle gave the Trojans even better field position, starting the drive near the Viking 10-yard line.  Turberville called his own number once again, scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run with just 34 seconds left before the half.  The PAT was no good and Johnson led at the half, 21 – 0.

While the Viking defense held the Johnson County offense in check for the rest of the night, the offense struggled to move the ball consistently.  The best Viking drive of the night was in the third quarter as they drove inside the Trojan 10-yard line only to fumble the snap on a fourth and 1 attempt.

The Vikings did get on the scoreboard with 8:01 left in the game when quarterback Kylan Page connected with senior wide receiver Jordan Coney on a 72-yard touchdown pass that went through the hands of a Trojan defender allowing Coney to make an acrobatic catch and scamper to the endzone.  The Viking PAT was blocked, and Treutlen fell to the Trojans, 21 – 6.

The Vikings, now 1-3 on the season, travel to Rochelle this Friday night for their first region game of the season against the Patriots of Wilcox County with kickoff set for 7:30.  Catch all the action on 101.7 FM, Sweet Onion Country and online at www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com

Viking Comeback Falls Short

The Treutlen Vikings hosted the Bacon County Red Raiders Friday night at Bobby Driggers Stadium and despite a second half rally, fell to the visitors 31 – 21.  It was the first ever meeting between the two teams.

The Red Raiders started quickly, scoring on the first play from scrimmage, a 66-yard run by freshman running back Keyandric Dixon.  The PAT was good, and Bacon County led 7 – 0.  Bacon County scored again on their second possession of the night when senior running back DeAnthony Green ran it in from 7 yards out.  The Isaiah Thomas PAT split the uprights once again and the Red Raiders led 14 – 0 with 3:58 remaining in the first quarter.

The Viking defense began to stiffen and held the Red Raiders out of the endzone for the rest of the first half, however the Bacon County defense was able to get a touchdown on a 30-yard interception return with 3:48 remaining before halftime.

The Viking offense was finally able to push across a touchdown with 1:53 left before halftime on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Kavion Peeples to Jordan Coney.  The Leo Brinson PAT was successful, and the Vikings trailed at the half, 21 – 7.

Treutlen took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 70 yards, capping the drive with a 17-yard touchdown run by quarterback Kylan Page.  The PAT was no good and the Red Raider lead was now just 8 points, 21 – 13.

Bacon County answered 2 possessions later when Green ran it in again for 7 yards out to give the Red Raiders a 28 – 13 lead with 3:40 left in the third quarter.  The Vikings answered just 21 seconds later when senior running back Rod Fuller broke through the line and outran Red Raider defenders 78 yards for the touchdown.  The Viking 2-point conversion run by Kylan Page was successful, cutting the lead to 28 – 21 late in the third quarter.

Two turnovers in the fourth quarter by the Vikings squashed potential game-tying drives and the Red Raiders added a 39-yard field goal by Isaiah Thomas to give Bacon County the 31 – 21 victory.

Treutlen will next play in Wrightsville on September 13th against the Trojans of Johnson County with kickoff set for 7:30 pm.  Catch all the action with Jeff Raiford and Nathan Lamb on Sweet Onion Country 101.7 FM and online at www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com

Treutlen Falls on the Road to the Warriors

The Warriors took control of the contest early, scoring on their first two drives of the first quarter.  The first was a 17-yard run by sophomore quarterback Quinterrion Sanford with 9:57 left in the first quarter.  The two-point conversion run by Terrell Blount was good giving the Warriors a lead they would not relinquish.  Their second score came on the Warriors second possession when Blount ran it in from 9 yards out.  A two-point conversion pass from Sanford to Jatavius Hill was successful and the Warriors held a 16 – 0 lead with 4:26 remaining in the first quarter.

The Viking defense stiffened in the second quarter, holding the high powered Warrior offense out of the endzone however the Viking offense could not get onto the scoreboard.  The Vikings trailed at the half 16-0.

In the third quarter, the Viking offense began to move the ball more consistently but were still unable to find paydirt.  Wilkinson County extended their lead with 3:01 remaining in the third quarter when Sanford connected with Jatavius Hill on a 5-yard touchdown pass.  The PAT was no good and the Warriors led 22-0 heading into the final quarter.

Junior running back Terrelle Blount found the endzone for the second time on the night, another 9 yard scamper for the score with 9:38 left in the contest.  The PAT was good and the Warriors led 29-0.

The Vikings were finally able to remove the goose egg from the scoreboard when senior running back Rod Fuller broke loose for a 37-yard touchdown run with 5:06 remaining in the game.  The PAT was good by kicker Leo Brinson making the final score 29-7 in favor of the Warriors.

The Vikings return home this week to face the Bacon County Red Raiders for the first time ever on Thursday night at 7:30 at Bobby Driggers Stadium in Soperton.  Catch all the action with Jeff Raiford and Nathan Lamb on Sweet Onion Country 101.7 FM and online at www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com

Vikings Down Cobras in Season Opener

The Treutlen Vikings kicked off the 2024 season with a home victory over the Twiggs County Cobras at Bobby Driggers Stadium in Soperton by a score of 40 – 0.  It’s the Vikings third win in a row going back to last season and the first victory for new head coach Alan Shurling at the helm of the Viking ship.

The Treutlen defense set the tone for the night early in the contest forcing a three and out on the Cobras’ first possession of the game.  Then on their first play from scrimmage at the 50-yard line, Viking senior quarterback hit senior receiver Jordan Coney on a touchdown pass down the left sideline to give the home team the lead after just one play from scrimmage.  The PAT was good by kicker Leo Brinson and the Vikings led 7 – 0 with 9:56 remaining in the first quarter.

On the Cobras’ next possession, the ball was stripped from Twiggs County quarterback Brandon Davis flying straight into the hands of Viking Zan Stokes who returned the gift 65 yards to paydirt.  The Brinson PAT split the uprights and Treutlen led 14 – 0 with 8:49 left in the first quarter.

The Viking defense was opportunistic again when the ensuing Twiggs County drive was halted at the Viking 10 yard-line as Za’Kian Tobler scooped up a Cobra fumble and scampered 90 yards for a touchdown.  Once again, the Brinson PAT was good, and Treutlen led 21 – 0 with 6:12 left in the first quarter after running only one offensive play.

The Viking offense added another touchdown with 2:54 left in the first quarter, when Za’Kian Tobler powered his way in from six yards out.  The PAT was blocked, and Treutlen led 27 – 0.  Treutlen carried this lead into halftime as the second quarter had no scoring from either team.

The Treutlen ground game took over in the second half, pounding out first downs and keeping the ball away from Twiggs County.  With 1:45 left in the third quarter, senior running back Rod Fuller got in on the scoring, running untouched 35 yards for a touchdown.  The Brinson PAT was good and Treutlen extended their lead to 34 – 0.  Fuller tacked on another touchdown run with 1:20 remaining in the contest to give Treutlen a 40 – 0 victory.

Treutlen will travel to Irwinton Friday night for the first time since 2005 as they will face the Wilkinson County Warriors in a non-region contest.  The Vikings will be in search of their 4th win in a row, something that hasn’t been done by the Vikings since the 2009 season.  Kickoff is set for 7:30 and can be heard on 101.7 FM and online at www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com with Jeff Raiford and Nathan Lamb.

Vikings Take Down #10 Telfair County

The Treutlen Vikings closed out their 2023 season on the road in McRae where they defeated the #10 ranked Telfair County Trojans by a score of 20-12.  It was the first win for the Vikings against a top ten team since 1981 and the first victory over the Trojans in McRae since 2001.

Telfair County struck first on their opening drive when Rodriquez Clay ran it in from 10 yards out, just 1:08 into the contest.  The PAT attempt was no good and the Trojans led 6-0 early in the contest.

The Vikings answered on their first drive of the game when running back Rod Fuller ran it in from a yard out with 2:15 remaining in the first quarter.  The two-point conversion attempt came up short and the game was tied at 6 points each.

Treutlen grabbed the lead with just 1:39 left before halftime when quarterback Cooper Brantley threw a perfect over the shoulder pass to receiver Jordan Coney for a 36-yard touchdown.  The two-point conversion by Angelo Peeples was unsuccessful and the Vikings held the lead at halftime, 12-6.

Treutlen extended their lead on their first possession after halftime when Brantley found Demicah Williams wide open on a seam route and connected on a 62-yard scoring pass just 1:05 into the third quarter.  The two-point conversion run by Rod Fuller was good and the Vikings led 20-6.

Telfair County cut into the Viking lead with 5:00 left in the game when Quez Davis caught an Antonio Scott pass, bounced off a Viking defender, and ran 35 yards for the score.  The two-point conversion attempt by the Trojans was stuffed by the Viking defense.  The Viking offense then took control on the ground and ran out the clock on the Trojans, giving the Vikings the victory.

The Vikings ended the season with back-to-back wins over Wheeler and Telfair counties, sending their 10 seniors out on a winning note.  The Vikings finish the season with a 3-7 record, their best since 2019.

Vikings Win The River Rumble

The Treutlen Vikings welcomed longtime rivals, the Wheeler County Bulldogs to Bobby Driggers Stadium Friday night for senior night and knocked off their foes from across the Oconee River 8-7 in a hard-nosed defensive battle.  The win marked the first time since 2015 that the Vikings defeated their two biggest rivals, Montgomery and Wheeler counties in the same season.

The Vikings got on the scoreboard first with 8:58 remaining in the first quarter when freshman running back Peyton Miller ran it in from 15 yards out for Treutlen’s only touchdown of the night.  The two-point conversion run by Angelo Peeples was successful and proved to be the difference in the victory.

Wheeler County answered the touchdown with one of their own with just 7 seconds left in the first quarter when senior quarterback Rhett Rogers threw a perfect pass to Jeremiah Kincy for a 31-yard touchdown.  The Bulldogs lined up for a potential tying two-point conversion attempt, but a penalty pushed the Bulldogs back 5 yards.  Facing the longer conversion attempt, Wheeler County settled for the PAT kick that was successful by Bulldog Kicker Juan Juarez, cutting the lead to 8-7.  As it turned out, that was the difference in the contest.

Both offenses moved the ball sporadically between the 20 yard lines throughout the remaining three quarters but could not scratch across another touchdown.  Wheeler County had another chance to take the lead in the second half, but a 33-yard field goal attempt by Juarez had plenty of distance but sailed just wide right.

The Vikings improve to 2-7 on the season and pick up their first region victory since defeating Telfair County in 2021.  Ironically, the Vikings will close out their season against those same Trojans this Friday night on the road in McRae with kickoff set for 7:30.  As always, you can catch all the action with Jeff Raiford and Nathan Lamb on Sweet Onion Country 101.7 FM and online at www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com

Viking Comeback Falls Short

The Treutlen Vikings fell behind early to the visiting Hawkinsville Red Devils on Homecoming at Bobby Driggers Stadium Friday night before a fourth quarter rally fell short.  The Vikings 30–16 loss drops them to 1–7 on the season.

After most of the first quarter was a back-and-forth defensive affair, Hawkinsville got on the scoreboard with just 30 seconds remaining in the quarter on a 3-yard run by Nelson Singletary.  The 2-point conversion was unsuccessful, and the Red Devils led 6-0 heading into the second quarter.

The Red Devil ground game took control in the second quarter, adding 2 more running touchdowns on carries of 3 and 7 yards by Zenard Smith and Nieem Blair respectively.  The point after attempts were both no good and Hawkinsville led 18-0 at the half.

The third quarter started much like the second quarter with the Red Devils scoring with 9:54 left in the quarter when Malek Brown scored on a 1-yard run.  The PAT was no good and the Red Devils led 24-0.  Hawkinsville added another touchdown on the ground in the fourth quarter when Dagan Mullis ran it in from a yard out with 4:42 left in the contest.  The 2-point conversion was again unsuccessful and Hawkinsville led 30-0.

The Vikings would not go quietly and finally found the endzone on a Rod Fuller 4 yard run with 3:30 left in the game.  A two-point conversion run by Fuller made the score 30-8.  Treutlen would hit paydirt again just 1:16 seconds later when Jordan Coney took the snap from center and scampered 88 yards down the middle of the field for another touchdown.  The two-point conversion run was successful again by Fuller and the lead was cut 30-16.  The ensuing onside kick attempt was recovered by the Red Devils, where they ran out the clock, ending the Viking comeback.

The Vikings will be back at home this Friday night as they face the Wheeler County Bulldogs coached by former Viking head coach Britt Ingle.  This will be senior night for the Vikings and their final home game of the season.  Kickoff is set for 7:30 and as always, you can catch all the action with Jeff Raiford and Nathan Lamb on Sweet Onion Country 101.7 FM and online at www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com.

Bobcats Bite Vikings

The Treutlen Vikings traveled to Vienna to face the Dooly County Bobcats Friday night and came up short, falling to the home team, 26 – 12.  The loss drops the Vikings to 1 – 6 on the season and 0 – 2 in region play.

The Viking defense forced a fumble on the Bobcats first possession and drove inside the 10-yard line but could not put any points on the board.  Dooly County responded later in the first quarter on a 15-yard touchdown pass from QB Antwan Clayton to WR Kwylek Woodham with 1:09 left in the first quarter.  Gustavo Jimenez split the uprights with the PAT and Dooly County led 7 – 0.

The Bobcats struck again with 6:32 remaining in the second quarter when Clayton hit De’Ante Burden on a 45-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead.  The PAT attempt was blocked by the Vikings and the Bobcat lead was 13 – 0.  Dooly County was not done in the first half as they scored on a 4-yard run by running back Jamario Westbrook with 1:38 left before halftime.  The Jiminez PAT was good, and Dooly County led 20 – 0 at the half.

The Viking offense got on the scoreboard on their first possession of the second half when running back Rod Fuller carried it in from a yard out with 9:45 left in the third quarter.  Freshman running back Peyton Miller had a nice 40-yard run to set up the score.  The two-point conversion was unsuccessful, and the Vikings trailed 20 - 6.

The Bobcats found the endzone early in the fourth quarter when running back Tommy Lee carried it in from 9-yards out.  The PAT attempt was again blocked by the Viking defense and the Bobcat lead was 26 – 6.

Treutlen cut into the lead with 6:24 left in the contest when QB Cooper Brantley hit WR Kylen Page on a 22-yard scoring strike.  The PAT attempt was no good, making the final score 26 – 12 in favor of the Bobcats.

The Vikings have next Friday off before they welcome the Hawkinsville Red Devils to town on October 20th for homecoming.  We need fans in the stands for this important region contest.  If you can’t make it, as always it will be broadcast on Sweet Onion Country 101.7 FM and online at www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com with Jeff Raiford and Nathan Lamb with kickoff set for 7:30 PM.

Vikings Come Up Short in Shootout

The Treutlen Vikings came up just short in a back-and-forth contest versus the Wilcox County Patriots at Bobby Driggers Stadium Friday night, falling 39 – 36.

After Wilcox County recovered an onside kick to start the game, the Viking defense came up big when linebacker Jake Brooks picked off a Johnny Nutt pass to end the Patriot drive.  On the next play, Viking running back Kolby McLendon found the right sideline and outran Patriot defenders for an 80-yard touchdown run.  The two-point conversion run was successful, and the Vikings led 8 – 0 in the first quarter.

The potent Patriot offense drove deep into Viking territory on their next drive, but the Viking defense stiffened on four straight plays inside the five-yard line to end the threat.  Lightning struck again for the Viking offense when running back DeMicah Williams broke loose for another 80-yard touchdown run.  The two-point conversion was unsuccessful, and the Vikings led 14 – 0 late in the first quarter.

After another good defensive stand by the Treutlen defense, the Vikings struck again, this time through the air as quarterback Cooper Brantley found receiver Jordan Coney on a 35-yard post pattern for the touchdown.  The PAT was good, and the Vikings led 20 – 0 in the second quarter.

The Wilcox County offense that had moved the ball consistently through the first half, finally got points on a 14-yard touchdown run by Patriot running back Dee Davis.  The PAT by Nutt split the uprights and the lead was cut to 20 – 7 in favor of the Vikings.  The Patriots added another touchdown with just 47 seconds before the half when quarterback Johnny Nutt ran it in from a yard out.  This time the PAT was wide right, and the Vikings led 20 – 13 at the midway point.

The Patriots tied the game with 10:01 to go in the third quarter when running back Jacobia Bolder scampered 15 yards for the score.  The Johnny Nutt PAT tied the contest at 20 points each.

The Vikings answered the score and retook the lead with 6:00 remaining in the third quarter when DeMicah Williams ran it in from 8 yards out to regain the lead.  The PAT was no good, but a roughing the kicker penalty on the Patriots gave the Vikings another shot from half the distance to the goal line and ran it in for a 28 – 20 lead.

Wilcox County added a touchdown when Nutt found Florida State commit BJ Gibson on a 47-yard touchdown pass with 4:42 left in the third quarter.  The PAT was good, and the Viking lead was just 1 point, 28 – 27.  The Patriots added another score as time ran out in the third quarter on a 6 -yard run by Davis.  The Viking defense stuffed the two-point conversion attempt but trailed now 33 – 28 heading to the fourth quarter.

The Patriots extended their lead with a 1-yard touchdown run by BJ Gibson from the wildcat formation with 7:19 left in the contest.  The PAT was no good and Wilcox County led 39-28.

As they had done all night, the Vikings would not quit and scored on a 69-yard touchdown pass from Cooper Brantley to Jordan Coney with 1:43 left in the contest.  The two-point conversion run was good, and the Vikings had cut the lead to just 3 points, 39 – 36.  The ensuing onside kick was unsuccessful, and the Patriots ran out the clock to defeat the Vikings.

The Vikings are now 1 – 5 on the season 0 – 1 in region play as they head to Vienna to face the Dooly County Bobcats next Friday night in another region contest.  Kickoff is set for 7:30 and you can catch all the exciting action on 101.7 FM, Sweet Onion Country and onlineat  www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com with Jeff Raiford and Nathan Lamb.

2021 Season Wraps Below

Another Viking Comeback Falls Just Short

Two third quarter touchdowns proved too much for the Vikings to overcome as they fell on the road to the Hawkinsville Red Devils 22 – 19 Friday night at Bobby Gentry Stadium in Hawkinsville.  The last time a Soperton team defeated the Red Devils in football was against Gentry himself back in 1961.

The Vikings took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards to take an early lead when Viking quarterback Jordan Coney hit wide receiver Kolby McLendon on a 12 yard pass for a touchdown with 7:19 remaining in the first quarter.  The PAT was no good and Treutlen led 6 – 0.

Hawkinsville answered with their first possession of the night as they drove 58 yards to tie the game when quarterback Chase Reese ran it in from 5 yards out.  The Red Devil two point conversion was unsuccessful and the game was tied at 6 with 2:35 left in the first quarter.

The Vikings regained the lead with 5:00 remaining before halftime when Jordan Daniels scooped up a fumble on a punt attempt by Hawkinsville and scampered 8 yards for a touchdown.  The Vikings two point conversion attempt was unsuccessful and Treutlen led 12 – 6 going into halftime.

The Vikings kicked off to start the second half.  The line drive kick into the defensive front of the Red Devils was caught and returned to the Viking 11 yard line.  Three plays later, Red Devil running back Darshon Polhill ran it in on the left side from 3 yards out to give Hawkinsville the lead.  The two point conversion was good and the Red Devils led 14 – 12 just 1:20 seconds into the third quarter.

Treutlen threw an interception on their next possession giving the Red Devils good field position at the Viking 45 yard line.  Hawkinsville took advantage and scored with 7:16 remaining in the third quarter when Red Devil running back Peebo Wright ran it in from 16 yards out.  Polhill ran in the two point conversion as well to give Hawkinsville a 22 – 19 lead.

The Viking defense held Hawkinsville in check the remainder of the night and cut into the Red Devil lead when they drove 75 yards, scoring on a 16 yard pass from Coney to wide receiver Tim Blair with 4:28 left in the game.  Kicker Danny Clements split the uprights with the PAT and Treutlen trailed by three points, 22 – 19.

Hawkinsville converted on several crucial third down situations to run out the remaining clock and Treutlen fell 22 – 19.

Treutlen will close out their season Friday night at Bobby Driggers Stadium as they host the Wilcox County Patriots with kickoff set at 7:30.  Hear the game on Sweet Onion Country 101.7 FM and online at www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com with Jeff Raiford and Nathan Lamb.

With Treutlen driving to take the lead just before halftime, Fred Brown of the Bobcats intercepted a Viking pass at the Dooly County 10 yard line and returned it 90 yards for the score.  The Vasquez PAT was good and Dooly County led 14 – 7 at the half.

Treutlen went three and out to start the second half and Dooly County took advantage scoring on their next possession when Clayton found TreDevin Cross on a 25 yard touchdown pass.  The PAT by Vasquez was good again and the Bobcats led 21 – 7 with 8:53 remaining in the third quarter.

After Dooly County tried an unsuccessful onside kick and picked up a penalty on the play as well, the Vikings took advantage of good field position and drove 35 yards for a touchdown when Quen Jordan scored again, this time on a 1 yard run.  The Pat was no good and Treutlen trailed 21 – 13 with 3:52 left in the third quarter.

After trading punts with the Bobcats twice, Treutlen began their final drive of the night at the Dooly County 45 yard line with 1:27 left in the game and no time outs.  The buzzer sounded as the Vikings through the ball into the end zone.  The pass to Kylan Paige was incomplete but Dooly County committed pass interference on the play giving Treutlen another shot at a score with no time on the clock.  This time with no receiver open, QB Jordan Coney ran it himself before getting tackled at the Dooly County 8 yard line ending the game.

Vikings Stun Panthers With 23 Unanswered Points for Road Win

After trailing by 16 points late in the third quarter, the Treutlen Vikings scored 23 unanswered points to stun the Panthers on the road in Portal to pick up their first win of the season 23 – 16.  The go ahead touchdown happened with just 9 seconds left in the game.

After the Vikings first drive of the night stalled, Portal struck quickly on just their second play from scrimmage when QB Hunter Lanier hit Elijah Colman for a 76 yard touchdown pass.  The PAT was good by sophomore kicker Jose Sanchez and Portal led 7 – 0 with 8:30 left in the first quarter.

The Vikings were forced to punt on their next possession as well but this time Wilken Washington came off the left side and blocked the punt, then scooped it up and scampered 30 yards for the Panthers second touchdown of the night.  The PAT attempt was no good and Portal led 13 – 0 with 6:52 remaining in the first quarter.

As the Treutlen defense began to slow the Panthers offensive threats, the Viking offense committed 3 turnovers in the second quarter alone, 2 fumbles and 1 interception to stop drives.  Portal carried the 13 – 0 into halftime.

With 6:15 left in the third quarter, Portal kicker Jose Sanchez hit a 20 yard field goal to extend the Panther lead to 16 – 0.  Shortly after that, things began to turn in favor of the Vikings.  The Viking defense forced a fumble on the Panther’s half of the field then got on the scoreboard when RB Qamar Jordan ran it in from 4 yards out for the touchdown.  Jordan also ran in the two point conversion to cut the Panther lead to 16 – 8 with 2:17 remaining in the third quarter.

After the next Viking drive stalled deep in Panther territory, the Treutlen defense got the Vikings on the board.  Lanier completed a pass in the left flat when Viking defender David Blackshear laid a crushing hit on the Panther receiver forcing a fumble that Viking linebacker Danny Clements scooped up and  returned 12 yards for the touchdown.  The two point conversion run was successful by Qamar Jordan again the Treutlen had tied the game at 16 with just 4:51 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Portal mounted a nice drive down the field to try and take the lead but Viking defensive back PJ Smiley intercepted a Lanier pass at the Viking 15 yard line, ending the threat.  Then with just 2:26 left in the game, QB Logan Hughes engineered a long drive, mostly on the ground by Hughes and Jordan, to put the Vikings ahead.  With just 9 seconds remaining, Hughes ran it in from 1 yard out to put the Vikings in front for good.  The PAT was good by Chris Mincey giving the Vikings the 23 – 16 lead.  An onside kick by Treutlen caught the Panthers off guard and was recovered by the Vikings to seal the win.

QB Logan Hughes led Treutlen with 147 yards rushing on 20 carries and RB Qamar Jordan added another 140 yards on 28 carries.

Treutlen ups their record to 1 – 2 on the season while Portal falls to 0 – 3.  The Vikings host Johnson County next Friday night in Soperton at Bobby Driggers Stadium with kickoff set at 7:30.  Be sure to catch all the action on Sweet Onion Country 101.7 FM and online at www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com.

Eagles Down Vikings

The Treutlen Vikings home opener versus the Montgomery County Eagles didn’t go their way as the visiting Eagles pulled away in the second half for a 31 – 7 victory at Bobby Driggers Stadium in Soperton Friday night.

After a defensive struggle for most of the first quarter, Montgomery County broke the ice with 2:55 left in the first quarter when Bo Davidson hit Brandon Denmark on a short pass in the right flat and Denmark found the sideline and scampered 65 yards for the touchdown.  The PAT attempt was wide left and the Eagles led 6 – 0.  Montgomery County carried that lead into the half as well.

Denmark scored again with 11:35 remaining in the third quarter when he ran 75 yards for his second touchdown on the night.  The 2 point conversion was unsuccessful and the Eagles led 12 – 0.

Treutlen scored their only time of the night on a 3 yard run by QB Logan Hughes with 6:50 left in the third quarter.  The Chris Mincey PAT was good and the Vikings cut the lead to 12 – 7 but could get no closer.  With 2:50 left in the third quarter, Kristan Boyer scored on a 44 yard run for the Eagles.  The PAT was wide left again and Montgomery County led 18 – 7.

Vikings Drop Opener to Lanier County

The Treutlen Vikings kicked off their 2020 season on the road in Lakeland, GA Friday night against Lanier County and came away with a 30 – 6 loss to the Bulldogs.  Inconsistency and mistakes on offense made scoring difficult for the Vikings on their opening night.

Treutlen’s first drive ended with an interception on their own 32 yard line.  It was the first of 2 picks on the night along with a fumble giving the Viking offense 3 turnovers in their season opener.  Lanier County took advantage of the first quarter gift, scoring 5 plays later on a Jaylan Calhoun 1 yard run.  The PAT was perfect by Kicker Daniel Cruz, giving the Bulldogs a 7 – 0 lead with 7:08 remaining in the first quarter.

After trading fumbles with Lanier County and punting on their following possession, Lanier County got great field position once again.  Bulldog QB Rashad Brockington hit Kish Wright on a 15 yard fade route for a touchdown.  The Cruz PAT was good once again and Lanier County led 14 – 0 with 10:42 left in the first half.  The Viking defense began to stiffen and trailed going into halftime down 14 – 0.

The Bulldogs took the second half kickoff and drove deep into Viking territory before Kicker Daniel Cruz nailed a 29 yard field goal that would’ve been good from 49 yards to extend the Bulldog lead to 17 – 0 with 9:31 left in the third quarter.  After another Treutlen turnover, less than three minutes later, Lanier County struck again on a busted play when Brockington recovered a bad snap and found Isaiah Alexander 20 yards behind Viking defenders for an easy 37 yard touchdown pass.  Cruz was accurate once again giving Lanier County the 24 – 0 lead with 6:42 remaining in the third quarter.

After a nice 40 yard kickoff return by the speedy Tim Blair, the Viking offense got on the board for the only time of the night when RB Qamar Jordan barreled his way across the goal line from 5 yards out cutting the lead to 24 – 6 for the Bulldogs with 7:31 left in the contest.  The Vikings would get no closer as the 2 point conversion attempt was stuffed by the Bulldog defense.

Lanier County tacked on another late touchdown on a 42 yard strike from Brockington to Alexander with 4:33 left in the game.  The PAT was partially blocked and the final was 30 – 6 for the home Bulldogs of Lanier County.

Treutlen managed just 71 yards of offense on the night while Lanier County totaled 283 yards, 202 in the air.

The Vikings are off next Friday and will have their home opener on September 18th versus the rival Montgomery County Eagles at Bobby Driggers Stadium with kickoff at 7:30.  Catch all the action on Sweet Onion Country 101.7 FM and online at www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com.
